{"id":595,"date":"2012-08-26T00:03:23","date_gmt":"2012-08-26T05:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/?p=595"},"modified":"2012-08-26T00:33:41","modified_gmt":"2012-08-26T05:33:41","slug":"what-do-you-mean-mortise-and-tenon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/?p=595","title":{"rendered":"What Do You Mean, &#8216;Mortise and Tenon?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When asked what timber framing is all about, where do I start? \u00a0The timbers make sense to most people, but the mention of mortise and tenon joinery is usually met with glassy stares and confusion. \u00a0So.<\/p>\n<p>When two timbers meet\u00a0perpendicular-like, one good way to join them is with a mortise and tenon. \u00a0It&#8217;s the traditional way to do it since it doesn&#8217;t require any fasteners. \u00a0Back then I guess labor was cheaper than nails, but it sure isn&#8217;t any more. \u00a0Without getting into a long winded discussion about why we&#8217;d spend the time to do it this way, let&#8217;s just say that we are and move on.<\/p>\n<p>Long story short, you make a tenon on one timber and cut a mortise in the other. \u00a0Once the tenon is stuck into the mortise, you drill a hole or two and pound a peg in there to hold everything tight.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the tenon:<\/p>\n<p>First you lay it out:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Layout.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-596\" title=\"Layout\" src=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Layout-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Layout-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Layout-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Layout-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>See the tenon in there? \u00a0This layout is wrapped around the whole timber.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next you make the end cuts of the tenon:<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Heel-and-End-Cut.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-597\" title=\"Heel and End Cut\" src=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Heel-and-End-Cut-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Heel-and-End-Cut-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/skoglundwoodwork.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Heel-and-End-Cut-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>This piece has two (end and heel) since it&#8217;s an angled tenon for a brace at a pitch. \u00a0Both of these cuts have to be made from both sides (for a total of four cuts), since this is an 8&#8243;x8&#8243;
